It's stuff that we've seen before, but it's done reasonably well.
Heartlock is lean, stylish and confidently crafted.
The picture's gender and race dynamics, not to mention its forced star-crossed lovers theme, are sufficiently commonplace to register as hackneyed.
This indie drama simply lacks the necessary cinematic tension. Despite fine performances from its lead performers, the film never fully comes to life.
No matter the convincing performances and poignant points regarding politics in the prison community, this deadly dull drama doesn't get away with a get-out-of-jail-free card.
