Critic Consensus: Smart, stylish, and nail-bitingly tense, Honeymoon packs more slow-building horror than many bigger-budget productions.

Movie Info

Young newlyweds Paul (Harry Treadaway) and Bea (Rose Leslie) travel to remote lake country for their honeymoon, where the promise of private romance awaits them. Shortly after arriving, Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of the night. As she becomes more distant and her behavior increasingly peculiar, Paul begins to suspect something more sinister than sleepwalking took place in the woods. Treadaway (CONTROL) and Leslie (HBO's GAME OF THRONES) give captivating leading performances as a couple that takes new love to disturbing depths. With romance slowing giving way to terror, writer/director Leigh Janiak puts her unique stamp on this intimate, chilling thriller. (c) Magnet Releasing

Janiak does find a great deal of success turning that dreamy romance on its head, plunging her leads into a nightmarish scenario and ensuring you'll never forget what happened to them.

For those who have ever nursed suspicions that the answer is "not enough," Honeymoon will inspire chills much more bone-deep than the ones provoked by, say, some poltergeist flinging around chairs.

Janiak's directorial debut makes confident use of limited resources to conjure creepy thrills, peering through the cracks in the couple's imploding relationship, spying shadowy monsters lurking in the darkness.

The honeymoon takes place in -- oh, guess -- a deserted cabin in the woods, like a failed Evil Dead.

Co-writer/director Leigh Janiak aims for Lars von Trier's sustained dread, but manages only vague unease.

Audience Reviews for Honeymoon

½

Good horror. I wish the ending was a bit different, but overall I liked it. The couple were convincing and weren't your generic horror movie victims. The gore wasn't over the top, though there were some revolting moments.

½

A solid psychological horror that takes its time to make us like its characters and care about them before investing in a creepy, intriguing mystery. It is just a pity, though, that it doesn't offer a more consistent payoff and seems to wrap up too all of a sudden.

As a horror it fails abysmally, but the mystery elements actually work quite nicely, and the drama/relationship-y stuff is pulled off well also.
