In Time (2011)

Critic Consensus: In Time's intriguing premise and appealing cast are easily overpowered by the blunt, heavy-handed storytelling.

When Will Salas is falsely accused of murder, he must figure out a way to bring down a system where time is money - literally - enabling the wealthy to live forever while the poor, like Will, have to beg, borrow, and steal enough minutes to make it through another day. -- (C) 20th Century Fox

The film's central metaphor is so sublimely obvious it feels like it's been stolen from a forgotten Star Trek script.

If you're just after popcorn thrills, then In Time is not a complete waste of time, but future generations will not remember it.

In Time is so crammed with provocative ideas it begins to feel over-crowded.

The movie meanders in circles, frustratingly wasting its intriguing premise showcasing a story of Robin Hood meets Bonnie and Clyde-like heroic villains on the run that's as rudimentary as it is forgettable.

Clever and unsettling.

Timberlake is fine but not as good as he was in The Social Network because he doesn't get the chances. It's a pity, but this sort of thing needs a brighter director.

Audience Reviews for In Time

Feeling like a teevee show that wants to be a movie, we go through scenes where everyone acts as if you might care while in truth you simply don't. There's an interesting premise that's not properly explained, not enough to draw you into the story, and so when the Robin Hood half of the film kicks in - the people's rebellion against injustice - you can admire the effort but that's as far as it goes.

It has an intriguing idea but the plot lacks so much information regarding the backstory and mechanics of its universe that it becomes incoherent, implausible and utterly stupid, with plot holes, pretentious dialogue and muddled motivations - especially from Murphy's character.

Every frame of this dystopian thriller wants to remind you how excellent Niccol's Gattaca was. He is simply trying to tell a similar story set in a different futuristic world. As far as the premise and the first couple of acts go, that really works. Once you accept the idea of people paying with time, the plot is quite fascinating at first. Sadly, it feels like they didn't know where to go with it and what to do with the minor characters. The interesting cop is entirely wasted, for example. That's still entertaining enough but by the end you feel like this could have been so much more.
