Incredibles 2 (2018)

Critic Consensus: Incredibles 2 reunites Pixar's family crimefighting team for a long-awaited follow-up that may not quite live up to the original, but comes close enough to earn its name.

Movie Info

Everyone's favorite family of superheroes is back in "Incredibles 2"--but this time Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is in the spotlight, leaving Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell) and Dash (voice of Huck Milner) to navigate the day-to-day heroics of "normal" life. It's a tough transistion for everyone, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby Jack-Jack's emerging superpowers. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) must find a way to work together again--which is easier said than done, even when they're all Incredible.

Bird laces in subliminal messages, but the main attraction of Incredibles 2 is the focussed storytelling, the clear and uncluttered animation and unadulterated fun.

Brad Bird's Incredibles 2, while a solid follow up, lacks a clear vision of where to take the story next.

What thrilled me the most ... watching these characters do the thing they were born to do [and] fully be themselves instead of repressing something fundamental about themselves.

You'll gawp. You'll ponder. You'll laugh. A Pixar flick would be nothing without the last.

Brad Bird not only directs with the same assured inventiveness he brought to The Incredibles (and Ratatouille, and The Iron Giant), but has written a script every bit as smart, witty and touching as the first.

There's a serious movie lurking at the heart of all this hi-tech adventure that takes timely swipes at gender inequality, family stress and the modern triumph of salesmanship over substance.

Audience Reviews for Incredibles 2

After the undeniable triumph of the first film, I can't entirely wrap my head around why the sequel let me down so much. The animation is flawless, the production design spot on, the action sequences soar. The soundtrack is already maybe a bit too much on the nose, with its catchy 60s agent fanfares. The real problem is the plot, though. It's just not particularly interesting, nor is the villain reveal very surprising. The biggest problem is, that I did not get the impression the movie likes superheroes all that much.

This outing of the first superhero family of film is noteworthy for the daring decision to feature the female lead most prominently - as the male lead struggles with care of the family unit. Interestingly, Mr. Incredible is shown as quite overwhelmed in taking on Elastigirl's traditionally assigned functions, while Elastigirl herself is quite at home doing his job. Also on display is the emerging unknown quantity in the baby of the family - who seems endowed with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men. All of this is kept interesting and dynamic, the emphasis on humor running throughout the piece to pleasing effect.

It is a pity that the identity of the villain is so obvious, and I also find it funny that no one even considers using Voyd's power as a solution in the movie's climax, but never mind, this is a great sequel that manages to be thrilling, hilarious and more visually stunning than ever.
