Kidnap (2017)

Critic Consensus: Kidnap strays into poorly scripted exploitation too often to take advantage of its pulpy premise -- or the still-impressive talents of its committed star.

A typical afternoon in the park turns into a nightmare for single mom Karla Dyson (Academy Award winner Halle Berry) when her son suddenly disappears. Without a cell phone and knowing she has no time to wait for police help, Karla jumps in her own car and sets off in pursuit of the kidnappers. A relentless, edge-of-your seat chase ensues, where Karla must risk everything to not lose sight of her son. In this tense, action-fueled thriller, directed by Luis Prieto and from the producers of SALT and TRANSFORMERS, one mother's heroic attempt to take back her son leads her to ask herself how far she will go to save her child.

For an entire 84 minutes, I sat in the theater wondering why she decided to participate in this. I guess if for nothing else, it was good to see the actress doing something.

At just 81 minutes, it's a short shot of adrenaline, exhilarating yet predictable.

[Kidnap] is wild, unbelievable, yet a ridiculously fun watch.

Berry knows how to seize the center spot and hold on tight. In Kidnap, she gets quite an exhausting workout, and so does the audience.

The only way Kidnap could possibly work is if the viewer isn't paying attention.

Aggressively stupid Kidnap is a passable B-movie exploitation throwback.

Audience Reviews for Kidnap

Halle Berry stars in the indie thriller Kidnap. While at a park a single mother's child is abducted out from under her, lead her to get into a high-speed car chase; knowing that if she loses them she'll never see her son again. Berry gives a really strong performance and director Luis Prieto does a good job at keeping the film in the main character's perspective; adding to the tension and suspense. And the stunt work is especially well-done, making for some really incredible car crashes and fight scenes. Yet the film is kind of limited in where it can go and what it can do. Still, despite having a few weaknesses, Kidnap is a gritty and exciting chase film that's remarkably intense.

Kidnap gets kidnapped... by itself. Alright, not really... but the concept of this film within a review makes it look like it. Stereotypes everywhere I agree, yes? Stereotypes or clichés, whatever you call it, make this film look ridiculously predictable from the start and are the huge reason why Kidnap kidnaps itself to a mediocre score.

Poorly crafted and pretty predictable, I do wonder how Halle Berry got to making movies like Kidnap. It's not awful, but it's obviously low-budget, and there's nothing to it that I can really see as being appealing beyond the paycheque.
