Movie Info

This well-wrought romance takes place in Lancashire, England in an industrial area where Vic (Alan Bates) and Ingrid (June Ritchie) work in the same factory. He is a draftsman who wants only a physical relationship with the woman of his choice (Ingrid), and she is a typist who wants true love with the man she is interested in (Vic). In carefully handled scenes throughout, Vic and Ingrid get together but with consequences neither could have foreseen. Ingrid becomes pregnant, and that one indisputable fact tests the mettle of their relationship more than anything else they could have imagined. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The playing Is good, John Schlesinger's direction (and his use of evocative backgrounds) is efficient. But the plot Is a bit frayed.

Neither Vic nor Ingrid is an especially compelling presence, but the actors make the sad moments pierce and the bursts of jubilation explode.

This is a compelling snapshot of Britain before the Sixties began to swing.

I was, and still am, deeply moved by the plight of both Vic and Ingrid in their attempt to find happiness and 'a kind of loving'.

June Ritchie makes an appealing debut as the bewildered Lancashire lass. Alan Bates is a likeable hero who will hold most audience's sympathy despite his weaknesses.

Audience Reviews for A Kind of Loving

This domestic tale from director John Schlesinger has that endearing, lo-fi authenticity so typical of British films from this era. Alan Bates and June Christie give excellent performances as a newlywed couple, and Thora Hird is loathsome perfection as Christie's shrew mother. The early scenes of blossoming love are wonderfully sweet, and this film has as good a "first kiss" as I've ever seen. However, there's too much movie for such a simple, humdrum story (a couple gets married for the wrong reason, and struggles through the early months of wedlock).
