Kiss The Girls (1997)

Critic Consensus: Detective Alex Cross makes his inauspicious cinematic debut in Kiss the Girls, a clunky thriller that offers few surprises.

Movie Info

This thriller is adapted from the 1995 novel by James Patterson about a serial killer prowling a Southern university. Washington, D.C., forensic psychologist Dr. Alex Cross (Morgan Freeman) is also a best-selling author. After his niece Naomi (Gina Ravera) is reported missing, he heads his Porsche for Durham, North Carolina, where eight young women have been reported missing. Bodies are found by local policemen (Cary Elwes and Alex McArthur), along with the killer's signature, "Casanova." Casanova is a "collector" of strong-willed women who are forced to submit to his demands. Soon, local doctor Kate McTiernan (Ashley Judd) is abducted from her home and taken to a dungeon -- where other women are imprisoned in underground chambers. After McTiernan succeeds in escaping, she joins Cross and other detectives in the search for Casanova -- a trail that leads to Los Angeles, where similar crimes are being committed by someone known as "The Gentleman Caller." Are these two criminals in competition with each other or are they working together? ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Freeman and Judd are so good, you almost wish they'd decided not to make a thriller at all -- had simply found a way to construct a drama exploring their personalities.

...a mostly entertaining yet thoroughly by-the-numbers thriller...

The tension is genuine and the crimes frightening, though the editing occasionally opts for flashy style over fitting artistry.

Predictability damages Girls.

A thrill-less thriller. Too violent for kids.

Audience Reviews for Kiss The Girls

Okay thriller. I felt like it could have been better than it was, but kept me interested most of the way through and had a good ending. I don't watch a lot of this type of thing, so i didn't find it too predictable, though it might have been for a fan of the genre. I like Ashley judd as an actress and i think she is good here.

A woman escapes from her kidnapper and returns to help the police to rescue other girls. Good thriller. Good cast.

It wasn't an awful film altogether, but it wasn't exactly a crime thriller. Sure, it had all the elements of the original novel, but it truly lacked the true to form Alex Cross, the propiety of serial killers, or suspense. Maybe it's just me, but it felt a tad stilted.
