The Lake House (2006)

Critic Consensus: The plot of The Lake House is a little too convoluted, and the film fails to pull off the sweeping romance it aims for.

I can't believe that even the most rabid chick-flick masochists wouldn't gag on it.

Bullock holds her half of the movie up well, proving that she can do subdued just as well as sunny.

I have always felt that both Ms. Bullock's patented expressions of anguish and Mr. Reeves' stoical minimalism have been somewhat underrated.

The Lake House demands a serious suspension of disbelief, but if you accept it as a romantic bit of nonsense, it has its pleasures.

The last time Bullock and Reeves were together on screen the result was Speed. This should have been entitled Stop.

A compelling idea delicately handled and neatly played, especially by Bullock. It just lacks the emotional directness to turn the good into the great.

Audience Reviews for The Lake House

There is a clear lack of logical chronology in this film. The letters exchanged seem unsubstantial letters at best. Is she really going everyday to a lake house to read and write letters? And then have imaginary talks with some guy from the past? The characters come off as slightly flat and without any particular personality. It's a flawed film with a good premise.

Hokey as hell but still enjoyable. I'm a sucker for time travel love matter how implausible or Keanu Reevesy. Paul McCartney and Nick Drake provide a moving soundtrack, and Tony and Pulitzer Award-winning David Auburn's script yields some nice romantic insights.

Filled with modern background music the equivalent of 1800's string orchestras, this Hallmark card of a film speaks to yearning and longing, love just out of one's hands. Guys will shoot themselves in the head before a half hour is gone. The ladies will open up the Ben and Jerry's ... one just for them.
