This story of a father and son surviving off-grid against an outside world of "chaos and marauders" might seem a cabin-bound reimagining of the post-apocalyptic The Road (2009), but Drew Mylrea's feature is more akin to The Village (2004).
It's clearly a film with a lot on its mind, one that's eager to grapple with the gnarled roots of its own appeal. But its reticence keeps it from exploring the more challenging, and possibly more rewarding, paths laid out before it.
Both an edge of your seat thriller and a fascinating character study, Last Survivors could have done with a little more time to explore its loftier ideas, but proves itself an engaging experience with a superb performance from Alicia Silverstone.
Alicia Silverstone is the standout in a movie that is well written and features some great character development. The story has its fault, but an entertaining watch.
A trio of fine performances communicate the emotional heft of a story riddled with Biblical musings making Last Survivors a fine addition to the apocalypse / survivalist thriller genre.
Directed by Drew Mylrea, Last Survivors treads the well-worn path of post-apocalyptic films but manages to keep things engaging
