Irene Dunne and William Powell have captured to a considerable extent the charm of the play by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse.
Curtiz knocks it together without so much as breaking sweat.

The beguiling chronicle of the Day family, so long a fixture on the Broadway scene, has been transformed faithfully and effectively.
In spite of his limitations Curtiz succeeds in giving the play considerable added heart interest. This was not easy to do.
Powell is nothing less than magnificent as the mustached philosophizing patriarch, and Dunne casts a warm glow beside him.
All in all it's innocuous with infrequent laughs.
Audience Reviews for Life With Father
'Life with Father' may be worth watching for a little historical perspective of the late 19th century. I am glad that wasn't my period in life though.

Irene Dunn and William Powell radiate likeable charm like a bakery throws out smells good from a block away in this slice-o-life family drama depicting "the good ol'days". There's a way things should be done, a way a family should be raised, there's the moral fiber of a family, and these considerations are on the table of a loving couple who nonetheless disagree about the answers to these thoughts and battle the whole movie for their own point of view, and battle each in their own way. Its a fun contest.

An interesting, intelligent, and realistic family drama with a great cast. I really liked it, although it was a bit boring at times.
