Even after separating, they retained their love for each other, and maybe that's because they believed in the Ricardos too. Lucy and Desi is a captivating record of how they turned a sitcom into a national dream.
There's a lot of material to cover here, some of it overly familiar, but Amy Poehler does it with pizzaz.

A relatively routine bio-doc but with an intimate, personal touch from a female comedian who clearly admires its subjects.
Anything that burnishes Ball's reputation is to be welcomed, and highlighting how Ball and Arnaz worked on and off the screen as Hollywood's first inter-racial couple only goes to illustrate how the struggles of today are the struggles of every day.
Poehler's successful comedy career no doubt informs this exploration and her unique perspective benefits the material.

Poehler brings a particularly powerful sense of connection and understanding to her debut documentary.
