Madame Bovary (2015)

Critic Consensus: Over the years, Flaubert's Madame Bovary has proven an exceedingly difficult novel to film -- and this version adds another disappointing entry to the list.

Barthes feels the need to improve on Flaubert, adding and dropping scenes and inventing social metaphors - mainly spiderwebs and corsets.

For a film about passion, it feels oddly flat and often passionless.

With her thousand-mile frown, Mia Wasikowska was born to play Victorian heroines, though she's a little too intelligent and self-aware for Flaubert's Emma Bovary.

It's an effective treatment of the book, only occasionally made distracting by the hodgepodge of accents sported by an international cast performing in English.

For all the talk of romance, this is a Madame Bovary that's grounded in the real - in the sounds and colors of Emma's world, in its material limitations and splendors.

Audience Reviews for Madame Bovary

A poor adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's classic novel, Madame Bovary is monotonous and cliché. The story follows a young woman who marries a country doctor, but finding her new life unfulfilling, she starts to spend recklessly and seeks out new lovers. Mia Wasikowska gives a strong performance but the character is underdeveloped. The film never really delves into the why behind her infidelity and excessive spending, which makes her come off as a rather shallow character. And the dialog is quite dry, with no passion to it. However, the film looks beautiful; with elaborate costumes and set designs. Also, the score does a good job at setting the mood and tone. Yet despite its first class production values, Madame Bovary has no heart.
