Critic Consensus: It can be didactic rather than truly suspenseful, but Master is an impressively well-crafted horror outing with a lot on its mind.

If you're going to mess with the horror movie genre recipe you have to do it with better ingredients. Diallo does not.
A filmmaker clearly proficient in both visual and psychological facets of horror, Diallo is a fearless new talent to watch.
This is a smart, meaningful first film, with nods all over the place to classics like The Shining and Rosemary's Baby, as well as more recent obvious touch points like Get Out. It's not all subtle, but then neither is prejudice.
The film will draw comparisons to Get Out for its exploration of race and privilege in an apparently progressive arena, but it's an impressively ambitious work in its own right, anchored by a sterling turn from Regina Hall.

A riveting genre experiment.
[A] creepy, accomplished, never-less-than-memorable feature debut, both an indictment of racist institutions and a horror movie in the vein of Get Out and Candyman.
