Critic Reviews for Miles
At times Miles feels a bit rickety around the edges, but the character at the center is instantly relatable and has a relaxed charm that makes the story compelling.
The bittersweet pangs of lived experience supply a pleasing ripple of authenticity throughout Miles, which helps keep it engaging even as the conflicts become increasingly manufactured.
It's hard to root for a protagonist who is focused only on his own narrow needs and seems indifferent to the broader issues his tale raises.
Miles' storyline also plays alongside his mother's with equal screen-time and yet it's his name that takes the film's title, deceiving us into believing he is some kind of landmark hero. Which he isn't.
Miles is gay and we know it. His mother knows it. And the town knows it - whether they care or not. But that aspect of Miles' life is actually very secondary to the film's main thrust.
