Miracle Mile (1989)

Critic Consensus: Miracle Mile brings about its small-scale doomsday tale with achingly rich bleakness and hypnotically nightmarish fervor.

Movie Info

Miracle Mile starts conventionally enough, with bashful musician Anthony Edwards going ga-ga over waitress Mare Winningham. After a pleasant if somewhat quirky day together, Edwards and Winningham plan a tete-a-tete at the all-night restaurant where the girl works. While preparing to call her on a pay phone, Edwards intercepts a frantic call from a soldier stationed at a Midwestern missile silo. The message: nuclear warheads have been launched, and it's only 70 minutes to Armageddon! This unsettling news casts severe doubts over the future of Edwards' and Winningham's relationship.

Miracle Mile has the logic of one of those nightmares in which you're sure something is terrible, hopeless and dangerous, but you can't get anyone to listen to you. Besides, you have a sneaking suspicion that you might be mistaken.

Audience Reviews for Miracle Mile

An everyday guy stumbles into some big, big news: the bombs are on their way NOW. What follows are his attempts to get out of town by sundown clown. Only (and here is where my frustration with the piece begins) one thing or another keeps him from doing that. By the end I felt as if I was being denied satisfaction by a malicious little kid. Interesting, but ...

Space filler at one time on the old Movie Networks. This film has high ambitious and a ridiculously low budget. As a result, everything takes place somewhere else. It can work. What is not seen is often horrific..but it doesn't work here.

I picked this film to watch because of Mykelti Williamson, he was in two episodes of Miami Vice and I now want to watch all his films, In this movie he plays a very funny but short part. His performance is worth 4 stars. The movie itself is about a man who takes a call at a phone booth and is warned of a upcoming nuclear attack on Los Angeles, which will happen in 50 minutes, and in that time he must find his girlfriend and leave town, so starts the boring film, the only highlight is the performance by Mykelti Williamson. This one is worth 2 1/2 stars;
