Movie Info

David Bowie plays this drama's title character, a strange Englishman who lives next door to Owen Walters (Bill Switzer), a 13-year-old suffering from cancer. Mr. Rice offers Owen life-affirming advice, and when he dies of mysterious causes, Owen is left to cope with both his own sickness and the death of his friend. Although his family proves to be unhelpful, he ultimately finds a way to prevail, thanks in part to the continuing posthumous parcels of wisdom offered by Mr. Rice.

The characters are stereotypes. Owen's world includes a loving mother, a stern but well-meaning father, a fat bully and a skinny weakling.

Audience Reviews for Mr. Rice's Secret

Bowie has a small but pivotal role in this coming of age drama. Interesting things to say about mortality.
