The film is an incoherent mess that may prove baffling to those unfamiliar with the source.
It is managed with honesty, dignity and conviction, and there are very real moments of personal pain.
The encounters with doctors and the hospital scenes are often chilling. Nonetheless, there is a plodding sentimentality and predictability here which stop the film from having the emotional kick that might have been expected.
