No Reservations (2007)

Critic Consensus: This romantic comedy may look good on paper, but it's too predictable and melancholy for the genre.

Movie Info

Master chef Kate Armstrong lives her life like she runs her kitchen at a trendy Manhattan eatery--with a no-nonsense intensity that both captivates and intimidates everyone around her. Kate's perfectionist nature is put to the test when she "inherits" her nine-year-old niece Zoe, while contending with a brash new sous-chef who joins her staff. High-spirited and freewheeling, Nick Palmer couldn't be more different from Kate, yet the chemistry between them is undeniable. Rivalry becomes romance, but Kate will have to learn to express herself beyond the realm of her kitchen if she wants to connect with Zoe and find true happiness with Nick.

Alas, this is one of those Hollywood copies that is perfectly decent in its acting and direction but hopelessly deficient in originality and any real flair.

Hie me to the vomitorium, it's a fantastically smug and boring movie about food and romance, pumped with artificial sweeteners.

There's not an unpredictable moment in Carol Fuchs's plodding, syrupy script; this dreadful remake of the moderately pleasing German film Mostly Martha is misconceived from start to finish.

The ingredients of the German original Mostly Martha this time produce a cliché Chinese dish, forgotten a mere five minutes later.

Here is a romcom that has been developed on a Petri dish in some unspeakable secret department at the Porton Down biological warfare unit, designed to release a gaseous vapour into cinemas, rendering the civilian population immobile.

After Nick's opera karaoke I was ready to bludgeon my own ears off with a meat tenderiser.

Audience Reviews for No Reservations

The movie poster suggested "No Reservations" would be a rom-com -- but there was no discernible "com" actually in it. While there certainly was a modicum of romance, the story is much better characterized as a drama focused on a career-minded woman taking on the responsibility of raising her traumatized niece after a terrible tragedy, and who grudgingly allows a cute but insipid male sidekick into the house as a hanger-on. It was entertaining from the professional kitchen angle, but there did not seem to be much leavening in the bread.

Ordinary rom-com but Eckhart is appealing.

More romantic/drama than a comedy. It has more heartfelt, feel good moments than any really laugh out loud scenes. Still it was a nice story, with a good cast and well made. Just always a bit predictable.
