Movie Info

In this youthful surfing adventure, a hot young surfer wins a wave-tank contest in his native Arizona and decides to temporarily abandon his studies to hit the fantastic waves of the Hawaiian North shore pipeline. Once there, he is derided by the other surfers because nobody believes that a boy from the desert could possibly know anything about surfing real waves. Fortunately, an aging hippie (and supremo surfer), who designs boards for a living, believes in him and so teaches him the ropes. While learning about the sea and preparing for an international surfing competition, the boy also learns valuable lessons about life and love.

...the picture generally comes off as an affable and perfectly watchable piece of work.

North Shore keeps threatening to expire from sheer brainlessness. But then along comes an evening vista that shows how Sunset Beach got its name, or a crash of waves that looks like a living Hokusai, and you realize summer is still very much with us.

Audience Reviews for North Shore

Only see it if you're a surfer film fan. The story is predictable and boring, nothing exciting. There were some nice moments dealing with culture clash and apprenticeship, but it's all over shadowed by the predictable story, the surfing and love story.

Not bad for an 80's surf movie. I've been trying to remember this one for a while. All I could recall was that there was film that was kind of like the Surf version of Karate Kid. There was a "retired" old pro - that had mellowed out to be more in tune with the waves, the world ;) - training him reluctantly, but making him do it the "right way". He had to start out with this oversized old fashioned board that the island people use to use, and then board by board advance to finally use a modern Pro board with the latest and greatest brand name / technology.
