Movie Info

A trio of twenty something buddies tries to recapture the outrageous, irrepressible fun of their college years by starting their own off-campus frat house. Mitch, Frank and Beanie have all reached a crossroads in their lives. They can choose to be responsible adults, with wives, families and steady jobs--or they can postpone adulthood in favor of the reckless abandon of frat house living with all the fun and none of the education. No contest.

Very politically incorrect; funny for many adults.

Director Phillips confesses to frat membership in his youth, and even made a documentary on the subject. So why is this not funnier or more outrageous?

Only fitfully funny, except when Ferrell is onscreen -- then you won't stop laughing.

March 7, 2005 | Rating: 2/4

A harmless and intermittently funny 90 minutes.

It's pretty crass and broad, but there are bigger wastes of time around than this.

It's a hilariously funny and unexpectedly warm look at three men who just want to be boys again.

Audience Reviews for Old School

Why do men act like boys? Because they can. Saw it again! Very funny movie! If you're not offended by raunchy comedy, this movie will satisfy! Rent it, grab some popcorn and enjoy! Be careful drinking your cola though, you may end up snorting it out your nose. Mitch, Frank and Beanie are disillusioned with their personal lives begining when Mitch's nymphomanic girlfriend, Heidi, cheats on him, then former party animal Frank gets married, but unwilling to get go of his wild life, and Beanie is a family man seeking to reclaim his wild and crazy youth. Beanie suggests that they form their own fraternity in Mitch's new house on a college campus to re-live their glory days by bringing together a variety of misfit college students, losers, middle-aged and elderly retirees as their new friends and later try to avoid being evicted by the new Dean of Students, Pritchard, whom still holds a personal grudge against all three of them.

Old School is a movie of moments and it's the good ones that raise this a little above your average comedy flick. The ensemble cast is decent apart from Luke Wilson who isn't even remotely funny and the characters are just cardboard and forgettable. Will Ferrel is hilarious and Vince Vaugn is also pretty funny too. It's humour is director Todd Phillips' trademark raunchy and dark humoured style comedy and there's a few decent jokes if you enjoy that sort of thing. It's a good effort from everyone involved. It's not as good as Phillips' The Hangover but without a doubt, it's better than Road Trip.

There are some movies that try to be raunchy without the substance to convince audiences that the characters are genuinely raunchy (I'm looking at most of the iterations of the National Lampoon's movies). "Old School" delivers it. Though there were only a few laughs in there, it was entertaining for what it was; plus, this is one of the few roles where Will Farrell doesn't try too hard to be outlandishly crazy.
