Critic Consensus: A change of setting breathes some new life into the franchise, but Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones fails to provide enough consistent thrills to justify a fifth film in the series.

Critic Reviews for Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
This film is not scary, it's simply an exercise in waiting for a loud, ear piercing musical cue that forces us to be startled.
There's no getting past the nonsense formality of taking that camera everywhere.
Yeah, this movie's a dog, but you can't blame the producers for strip-mining the same old fool-proof formula to death... and beyond.
The plot is a confusing, derivative mishmash of half-baked supernatural clichés, and the total absence of characterization makes it hard to care what happens.
The Marked Ones is like a supernatural Hardy Boys mystery, about a couple of amateur sleuths finding something to do during a slow summer.
Audience Reviews for Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
So the "Paranormal Activity" franchise has been running out of steam the last few installments. Seems to have been a 1 trick pony, and that trick doesn't work as well. So they decided to go in a new direction with a latino cast, and freshen it up. It does work pretty good, as this is the best installment, other than the first one. The effects are good and the story is well designed. Towards the end it starts to drag and you'll be ready for it to be over. But comparing it to the last 3 movies, it's very good. The acting if decent considering it's all unknowns. I also, really liked how it ties into the rest of the franchise. Through the whole movie it seems to just be associated by name alone, then at the end you'll see where it fits in. Pretty clever how they did it. Is it a great horror movie? Not really. But for this franchise it is. Worth a watch, but not sure how much life this series has left.
After a very very disappointing fourth film, the Paranormal Activity franchise was clearly on the rocks and had no flavour left in it. "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones" may not be the best boost the franchise needed, as it copied many elements from every found footage film out there, but most of this film, you are actually wondering if it really is still part of the same franchise, and by the end of the film, you are reassured and I thought they pulled it off well. Many critics and fans are bashing this film, but at least this film tried, unlike some of the sequels. As demons mark certain people, they begin to get taken over by the demon inside them, and they also discover abilities and ways to travel through time. It may seem a little over the top compared to the others, and it is, but it works, because it is not based on the original stories, it only references them. Give me flack all you want, but I enjoyed this fifth instalment.
