Playing for Keeps (2012)

Critic Consensus: Witless, unfocused, and arguably misogynistic, Playing for Keeps is a dispiriting, lowest-common-denominator Hollywood rom-com.

Critic Reviews for Playing for Keeps

All Critics (91) | Top Critics (36)

Playing for Keeps recycles tired, flawed lessons about masculinity.

August 28, 2019 | Full Review…

The comedy has its moments but they are few, and a high-powered cast, which also includes Judy Greer and Dennis Quaid, give mostly low-powered performances.

Everyone involved deserves a script with more wit, originality and sense of purpose.

Dennis Quaid hammers away at a nothing role as Thurman's husband, an adulterous alpha dog; it's nearly identical to the one he played earlier this year in What to Expect When You're Expecting, but who's counting?

December 14, 2012 | Full Review…

These are actors due a break. Unfortunately, this comedy-drama about a kids' soccer coach boinking a bunch of desperate housewives doesn't appear to be it.

December 10, 2012 | Full Review…

It won't be up for any Oscars, nor will it score points for originality, but it's harmless enough fare for its target audience.

Audience Reviews for Playing for Keeps

Oh my...such low ratings. This was very sweet, and romantic. Typical chick flick stuff. (totally unrelated side note--Gerard Butler is unbelievably hot in this). ;)

Adequate but all over the place. The ending is sappy and it wastes several fine actresses in nothing parts.

There are some big actors in this movie and that is one of the main reasons I wanted to watch the movie. But even they couldn't save the film. It's not the best movie I have seen come from the actors, but still not the worse. The movie is quite predictable and one of those cookie cutter rom-coms that I tend to loathe so much. But still, it wasn't eye rolling worthy so I have to give it a little bit of props. It's a cute film but nothing special going on here. It's probably not something I would see again.
