Playing It Cool (2015)

Critic Consensus: Playing It Cool pits Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan's easy chemistry against a screenplay that tries too hard to be quirky and clever, and the results are disappointingly lukewarm.

Movie Info

While pretending to be a philanthropist at a charity dinner, the man meets a gorgeous woman named HER (Monaghan). The only catch: she's engaged. In order to continue seeing each other, the two embark on a platonic relationship, one that gets pushed to the test as the two begin to realize they may have unrequited feelings for one another. Like a young Walter Mitty, ME uses the power of imagination and wild vignettes to conquer HER heart.

Only the really strong cast, including great chemistry between the leads, keeps "Playing It Cool" from totally derailing.

Screenwriters Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair's script feels like a first draft that was written in one night as they got pumped up on Red Bull and speed-watched Netflix.

You know you're in trouble when almost every character is given a name except the two leads.

Proceeding with a strained quirkiness that infects much more than the names of its main characters, this first feature by Justin Reardon is a paean to the kind of narcissism that sucks the air out of every scene.

As characters endlessly digress on the differences between rom-coms and real life, the film evinces a schizophrenic relationship with its own inside-baseball cynicism.

There's nothing clever or subversive about Playing It Cool, which makes the film's overt self-satisfaction exponentially more infuriating.

Audience Reviews for Playing It Cool

Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan star in the quirky romantic comedy Playing It Cool. The story follows a struggling screenwriter who falls for a young woman at a charity gala and attempts to formulate a friend that soon grows into something more. Evans and Monaghan have good chemistry together and handle the comedy quite well. However, most of the jokes are hit and miss; particularly the reoccurring gag of Evans imagining himself in the stories that people tell him. Additionally, a lot of the characters are underdeveloped, which hurts the plot. While it delivers some laughs, overall Playing It Cool is a rather formulaic and uninspired comedy.
