Practical Magic (1998)
Critic Consensus: Practical Magic's jarring tonal shifts sink what little potential its offbeat story may have -- though Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock's chemistry makes a strong argument for future collaborations.

Critic Reviews for Practical Magic
Filming in a golden-syrupy light, Dunne seems to have little ambition beyond making his stars look adorable (not tricky) and hoping we'll have forgotten most of The Witches of Eastwick.
It doesn't seem as if there was much communication between the three screenwriters who are credited with adapting Alice Hoffman's novel. Perhaps they should have tried ESP.
Practical Magic, in other words, is anything but magical. The only spell it casts will put you right to sleep.
However many stories the movie tries to tackle from Alice Hoffman's original novel, the moments that have lived beyond Practical Magic's expected expiration date celebrate sisterhood with a fierce heart and love that blazes across cities.
Though its startling shifts in tone sometimes seem unmotivated, this dark yet syrupy 1998 romance has an adolescent charm.
It tootles along being cute... but to further its notions of sisterhood and the power of women, it also takes a spin through Thelma And Louise territory, then revisits The Exorcist to up the supernatural content. It's enough to make your head spin.
Audience Reviews for Practical Magic
Not that good.
What a waste of a talented cast.
It did felt corny at some moment(s) (the blood thingy at the end). But other than that, the whole movie was great. Is full of magic (not the silly ones). I loved the bonding of Sandra and Nicole. It made me jealous for not having a sister.

|Sally Owens:||Don't die on me, Gilly please, 'cause we're supposed to die together, at the same time. You promised me that, and this is not that day.|
|Gillian Owens:||Do you forgive our mother?|
|Gillian Owens:||Well, you'll never forgive yourself, unless you get up, get dressed and you brush you goddamn teeth, 'cause your breath stinks.|
|Gillian Owens:||I hate it here. I wanna go where... where no-one's even heard of us.|
|Sally Owens:||I feel like I'm never going to see you again.|
|Gillian Owens:||Of course you're going to see me again. We're going to grow old together. It's gonna be you and me, living in a big house. These two old biddies with all these cats. I mean, I bet we even die in the same day.|
