The screenplay by Daniel Taplitz lays on the nostalgic populism with a trowel. A big speech celebrating Red Dog as an emblem of Dampier's pioneering spirit feels out of keeping with the laconic Aussie idiom.
Though the film may be a little clumsy, and a few of the characters more annoying than endearing, you are guaranteed to have a good heartfelt laugh and quite likely a cry, thanks to this little Aussie legend.
All this is relayed in flashback and the storytelling is a tad episodic but it's exuberantly told, with some engaging characters and colourful visuals. Dog-lovers may even find themselves wiping away a tear or two.
