Beyond the surface novelty of the setting and premise, there's not much here that could exactly be called original. But the layering of reflections and shadows has a ghostly glamour of its own.
Like its characters, it's drunk on what came before, relying too heavily on noir tropes. But its smart, thought-provoking concept isn't so easy to shake off.
Joy doesn't lack for ideas. It's just that there are too many and few of them original.
The corny script and the static direction are both by Lisa Joy from the TV show Westworld. This is her first feature film. It probably won't be her last, but hope springs eternal.
It's as if the film itself is [wearing a costume] - and there's not much beneath that layer.
It's a clever tale, anchored by Jackman doing reliable work as an antihero haunted by his sins.
