Critic Reviews for Romero
All Critics (10) | Top Critics (2) | Fresh (8) | Rotten (2)
Where Romero excels as a film is in its depiction of its subject’s gradual transformation.
The film's weakness is a certain implacable predictability: We can feel at every moment what must happen next, and the over-all trajectory of the film seems ordained even in the first few shots. As a result, the film doesn't stir many passions.
A glaring depiction of how often holy men and women are martyred for standing up to evil men who willingly commit evil deeds.
As the story arc unfolds, Romero, in a state of inertia, is drawn into a gradual conversion experience, not just in a general sense, but in the specific trajectory of a "conversion to justice."
A riveting drama about the radicalization of a moderate Catholic priest as he is exposed to the violence and suffering in El Salvador.
Audience Reviews for Romero
When the film is not being emotionally exploitative, its actually a very effective argument for what made Archbishop Oscar Romero such a heroic and important figure. His refusal to support the corrupt government of El Salvador or the Marxist Rebels made his religious beliefs and practices all the more revolutionary because he served no one's political interests.
Super Reviewer
A fantastic drama with good actors, and it's based on a true story. I love Raul Julia in this movie.
