Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2012)

Critic Consensus: Quirky and a little reserved, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is nonetheless a charming little romantic drama sold by some strong central performances.

Movie Info

When Britain's leading fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor) is approached by a consultant (Emily Blunt) to help realize a sheikh's (Amr Waked) vision of bringing the sport of fly-fishing to the desert, he immediately thinks the project is both absurd and unachievable. But when the Prime Minister's overzealous press secretary (Kristin Scott Thomas) latches on to it as a "good will" story, this unlikely team will put it all on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible. -- (C) CBS Films

OK, if this film teaches us anything, it teaches us how to take a perfectly fine book and transform it into a mushy, corny, ghastly mess of the most trying kind.

It's an affable, inoffensive British comedy that just wants you to like it so much that you can't help but snicker behind its back.

Unfortunately, these characters belong to different worlds that don't meld, cartoonish political satire and dopey romcom.

Is there any genre more wearying than the plodding, fat- brained adaptation of last year's book club favourite?

April 20, 2012 | Rating: 1/5

The weakest part of this film is the ferocious government PR chief, played by Kristin Scott Thomas, with much lip-pursing and eye-rolling, but nothing funny or believable in the script for her to say.

The kind of film you might find on the DVD shelf of a holiday cottage, and that's not necessarily a criticism.

Audience Reviews for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

You may be turned off by the film's long and artless title, but after taking in this exquisitely restrained romance between man and woman, man and nature, the known and the unknown, you'd be hard pressed to find a title as earnest and true as the film itself.

Yet another feel-good movie, Scott-Thomas should have featured in it more as she was hilarious.

Unusual story about two people are put together because of an ambitious project of fly fishing in the desert. Good cast.
