Formulaic teen romance with an MTV spin.
As teen melodrama, well, Carter's film is what it is; but for such a mainstream black-consciousness movie, at least it doesn't shy from addressing some touchy issues about masculinity, parenthood, and black attitudes to whites.

To the film's credit, it tries, and while it never really sings, it does deliver the dance.

A refreshingly friendly view of a romance between people of different pigmentation, an area where more respectable pictures still wimp out.
It's just a pity for the actors and the audience that the theme of conquering one's background, prejudices, and limitations has to be spelled out in block capitals.

Patronising hybrid of a myriad of other teen movies. Don't bother, just watch them instead.

Audience Reviews for Save the Last Dance
Nice little movie. Have watched this one a few times over the years, and I don't especially like dance movies. This one has a good story outside the dancing, being about an aspiring ballerina whose mother dies, leaving her to live with her father she barely knows. He lives in a mostly black neighborhood so a lot of this is about her struggles to fit in as virtually the only white girl in school. There's a lot to say about racism and I think this movie does quite a nice job. Julia is lovely and the relationship between her and the brother of her new friend is believable. You really hope to see it work out for them.

One of the original film to blend love with dance in the modern-day millenium era. Stiles and Patrick Thomas' on-screen duo floats gracefully like any other partnered dance routine. The script, though predictable, still provided emotion to bring you to your feet. 4.5/5

Malakai: | This is an A and B conversation, so C yourself out of it. |
Snookie: | They call me Snook, the coochie crook. |
Chenille: | And this is Diggy. She thinks she's down. |
Diggy: | Excuse me? I am down, okay? |
