The fourth of the Sharpe adaptations, this is somewhat unusual in that the events of this (and the novel) do not take place around any particular historical event (such as the siege of Badajoz, or the battle of Talavera, or of Waterloo ...).

Rather, this is based around a more generic defence scenario: while the novel calls it the Defence of Portugal, it's really only a pass into the country. This is also the first to introduce the French spymaster Pierre Ducos, and is also the one in which Sharpe is (once again) bereaved.

With a nod to Arthur Conan Doyle's "Marechal Millefleurs"and praise for Hurley and Postlethwaite I'd say Sam has it right.

And here it isā¦.the end of Hakeswill. The book itself was very awesome and the film is just as good, but it is a bittersweet ending as both Teresa, who was a brilliant character for Sharpe, and Obadiah Hakeswill, the best antagonist for Sharpe, are both killed off. The death of Teresa is sad and upsetting, and the death of Hakeswill is also brilliantly done. With the story of a army of deserters to be battled, it offers a different perspective, and works brilliantly. Top class film.

One of the best sharpe for many reasons....it has Obediah Hakeswill, Captain frederickson, the rocket troop and Liz Hurleys jugs, what a winning combination.

The best yet. And Elizabeth Hurley guest starred. Some comedic moments, but also some heartbreaking ones.

They finally mix things up a bit in the fourth Sharpe film. I was a bit worried since the series was on the way to becoming a bit stale.
