Something's Gotta Give (2003)

Critic Consensus: Though it occasionally stumbles into sitcom territory, Something's Gotta Give is mostly a smart, funny romantic comedy, with sharp performances from Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton, and Keanu Reeves.

Movie Info

Harry Sanborn is a perennial bachelor who only dates women under the age of thirty. On what was to have been a romantic weekend with his latest infatuation, Marin, at her mother's Hamptons beach house, Harry develops chest pains. Marin's mother Erica Barry, a successful, divorced playwright, reluctantly agrees to help nurse him back to health. Once they are alone together, Harry is surprised to find himself drawn to Erica for all the right reasons. And despite her initial protestations about Harry, Erica finds herself rediscovering love. Romantic complications arise when Erica is also pursued by Harry's charming 30-something doctor, Julian Mercer. Once recovered, Harry returns home and goes back to his old ways. However, when his feelings for Erica prove to be life altering, Harry must undergo a true change of heart--if he is to win her back.

The movie, which ricochets between farce and poignancy, casts just enough romantic pixie dust to leave you smiling. It's certainly not the last word on the subject, but it's an amiable start.

It pays homage to the great pulse of warmth still, 27 years later, being given off by Annie Hall, and Keaton basks in the attention. You can hear the beat of her triumphant heart.

Delightful comedy, older teens and parents only.

As monotonous and predictable as a pacemaker.

The moments between the characters are absolutely full. It's a pleasure to watch such consummate professionals.

Ms. Keaton projects her wondrously warm personality, and the erstwhile Jake Gittes keeps us entertained with a sense of irony that keeps things from getting too sticky.

Audience Reviews for Something's Gotta Give

I ran across this on TV, and decided to see it for the second time and enjoyed it. I have not read up on Jack Nicholson's private life, but one wonders if he is just playing himself in this movie. I supposed the attraction of the movie is that true love can even overcome an obnoxious personality.

An arrow aimed directly at women, aged 45 and up, that actually hurts anyone other than that expressed audience to watch. It may injure even those intended with its simplistic pigeonholing of women, no matter how successful or how professional, still defining themselves solely by the men around them. There's plenty of stomach churning groans ahead, be warned, altho I'd watch McDormand watch grass grow (I like her that much ... and she'd make it interesting anyway!).

A very interesting Rom Com, not a perfect one, but Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton make this a wonder and a treat and is considered one of my favorite Diane Keaton films.
