Audience Reviews for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Phil Lord continues to hit, particularly on the animated front. This film is wonderfully original, which is important after the number of Spider-Man movies I've seen in my lifetime, it's also beautifully animated and just as heartfelt as it is funny. The actual plot is a bit lacking, and when you're dealing with a story about multiple dimensions there's bound to be some frustrating plot holes and questions, but the other aspects of this film are so great that they nearly completely cover up this film's flaws.

Fully embraces its comic origins and the realization that most viewers know the ins and outs of Spideys story. Where it goes from there is exciting, both visually and plot-wise. The animation is gorgeous and as diverse as the fantastic voice cast. Ultimately, after some very sweet and emotional scenes, the showdown does get a little messy in its wild chaos of colors, shapes and maelstroms, the entire film is certainly not for epileptics. It's also unfortunate that the songs are pretty dreadful when you are older than 13. That being said, the film is still a pleasure and brings some fresh air to the table.

A big, sprawling Spidey adventure/origin story that's execution is beyond reproach - it's gigantic! - and that embraces, no, it chokeholds, much of the by now popular Spidey lore...except for one niggling concern: "the proportional strength of a spider". There are several Spider creatures here, all from parallel dimensions by way of explanation, but not one of them could escape a wet paper bag. Oh yeah, they shoot spider webs and they swing around an intoxicatingly beautifully rendered Big Apple landscape, but (for me) one of the most alluring aspects of the wallcrawler was that he was as strong as the most buff of Marvel's coterie of jock straps w/o looking like it, if not stronger. Cut to: the look of surprise on all of his enemies faces. "This skinny runt is kicking my ass?!?" = the charm of SpiderMan. Disappointing.
