Critic Consensus: St. Vincent offers the considerable pleasure of seeing Bill Murray back in funny form, but drifts into dangerously sentimental territory along the way.

Melfi, an astute director, sets a very eccentric and consistently endearing tone that is reminiscent of the quirky spirit of Silver Linings Playbook.
A lovely little movie with a lot of laughs and a good heart - and a warning signal for a direction Murray's career could take, if he's not careful.

It's a cliche, but cliches go on existing only because they go on being refreshed, and Bill Murray and friends bring this one back to life with deadpan flair and a vigilant eye for any disfiguring taint of sentimentality.

It's almost inevitable that things get icky with this kind of story. Murray acts as a handbrake on that, simply because we don't know what awful thing he'll do next.

What's to like? Just that it's Bill Murray, with that special charm, however grotty at first he seems.

Sentimental slop.

Audience Reviews for St. Vincent
Of course you couldn't find a better actor than Bill Murray to play the bitter, grumpy weirdo who ends up being a kid's regular babysitter and ultimately his saint. Thankfully, the rest of the cast is just as great. Watts is utterly fearless as russian hooker and McCarthy was never as subtle and lovable as here. The kid is a real talent too. The plot doesn't offer major shockers or twists, but plenty of laughs and a few really sweet moments. The softening of the cold-hearted is not a new story, but with this talent involved it's fun to watch once more.

A recycled story full of clichés, like Bill Murray in cliched acting mode not even able to make a stroke sound convincing and an inevitable cliched final speech to make us forget the several loose ends - the loan shark, the bank money, the legal battle with the kid's father, etc.

A pleasant surprise!
