A well acted HBO movie from nearly 30 years ago. The acting is very good. The story is based after the horrible events at the Munich Olympics in '72. Not fully believable - these 5 guys appeared to have it too easy - but the story is intriguing. The movie would have been better by cutting out the last 20 minutes or so, but still, a very good political drama.

An enjoyable film that does raise a few questions, but ultimately comes down to where you stand on the subject of Israel. It's dramatic and it has it's moments of good dialogue and emotions.

Is this like Munich then?

Poor production values and the 2.5 hour running time notwithstanding, 'Sword of Gideon' is still a much better movie than Spielberg's 'Munich'... No doubt it's a tough ask to present a neutral view on events such as the Munich massacre and the extrajudicial retribution that followed but this movie manages do just that... and that makes it a movie worth watching!

This is the original version of what Steven Spielberg later remade as 'Munich'. This film is all around better than Spielberg's, despite a smaller budget and poorer production values, it avoids turning itself into an action/adventure film and instead deals with the characters and avoids excessive gratuitous violence, unlike Spielberg's. Thats not to say Spielberg's remake wasn't good, I just think this was better.

(1986) Sword of Gideon

True story based on an actual book called "Vengeance" written by George Jonas about retribution for the 1972 Olympic massacre on several Isralian atheletes! Some high official Israli gov't then form a group of people on their own to eliminate suspected terrorists connected to that Olympic incident! HBO tv movie, although well made with some well written dialogue is quite a depressing experience even if it's based on fact and the dialogue has some restraints! This was also the base for director Steven Spielberg to redo this film again starring Danial Craig called "Munich" !

1972: In the aftermath of the massacre of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympic games Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir orders the Mossad to retaliate. A team is put together under the Mossad Officer Samuels (Rod Steiger) and headed up by a young soldier named Avner (Steven Bauer). Avner and his team hunt down the members of Black September only to learn they in turn are being hunted.

Not as good as "Munich" but still a good telling of the story (a fictionilized account of true events). The acting is deceint, though this was originaly a made for TV movie, thus it can feel a bit meandering at times. Still worth a watch.

Another great movie, must watch. It highlights the fact the if you seek revenge you must dig two graves. You will be a victim also.

Timeless masterpiece. Even with all the world's technological advances, this movie works!

This movie had potential, but fell through the cracks. To bad.

This was an awesome movie! (Munich doesn't compare - it's only more violent and graphic.)

Way better than Spielberg.

Why did Spielberg feel the need to remake this. Spielberg essentially made a more polished, and more violent version of this film. Many scenes were identical to the original.

This movie was a hundred times better than the Spielberg Munich. Watch both and tell me Steven is still a good film maker.
