Take This Waltz is a Remarkable, Offbeat Love Story
Polley is a subtle filmmaker, and a surprising one, too.

Committed and resonant, Take This Waltz gets under your skin - and feels a lot like the work of an auteur in the making.

Basically pretty humourless, considering that sharp comics Seth Rogen and Sarah Silverman are in the cast, clearly doing their level best as actors. But there's no air for them to breathe.

Polley delivers a rich evocation of the central marriage, with its mixture of by-rote ritual and easy comfort, and makes the wise and unusual decision to portray the cuckold-to-be (Seth Rogen) as decent and good-natured, rather than stiff or cruel.

Flush with beauty and truth, and is unerringly, unnervingly accurate on love, desire and friendship.
Audience Reviews for Take This Waltz
Despite its minor flaws, which includes a clumsy beginning that relies on many coincidences, this bittersweet drama surprisingly grows to become quite mature and revealing, making natural even the seemingly contrived relationship between the character and her husband.

A young wife in a stagnant marriage is excited by the possibility of romance with a stranger. Sarah Polley delivers a capable tale, told in warm colors and cool music, of awakening, forbidden love, if w/o anything truly different to bring to the table. Michelle Williams carries the thing almost solely with the use of her big eyes, although the rest of the cast is competent enough. Seth Rogan is good, too, and nowhere near as annoying as he usually is.

I rather liked this. I loved the way the story was told with few words, and yet you really got what was going on. Telling the story with no history of the characters was an interesting departure from the norm. Deeply emotional, yet so tender. The actors were excellent. No easy answers in this story. No black and white. Realistically modern, and complex. Good stuff.
