Taken 2 (2012)

Critic Consensus: Taken 2 is largely bereft of the kinetic thrills -- and surprises -- that made the original a hit.

Critic Reviews for Taken 2

All Critics (172) | Top Critics (50)

"Taken 2" is really, really goofy -- it's even goofier because it thinks it's about the futility of vengeance -- but Liam Neeson almost makes you buy it.

February 12, 2013 | Full Review…

A sloppy, lazy, unintentionally laughable sequel.

October 14, 2012 | Rating: .5/5

A meta-American movie, a Godardian spoof of the whole genre, an attempt to see how stupid and insulting a motion picture can be and still be a big hit.

Taken 2 is more of the same, except a little bigger, a little dumber, and a little less invigorating.

October 7, 2012 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…

So lazily put together that it relies on flashbacks from its predecessor for the majority of its character development.

Neeson, despite having turned 60 in June, looks spritely enough in the role, and more than capable of another go-round should Taken 2 match its predecessor's success.

Audience Reviews for Taken 2

Fast, well edited and somewhat entertaining but also entirely underwhelming, unsurprising and occasionally downright ridiculous. Even Liam Neeson can't change that.

This cheap sequel is basically a rehash of the first movie, only with a few changes to make it look original - something that not even that previous chapter was. And it is less exciting and even more implausible.

For what it's worth, "Taken 2" it's not a particularly good film, but is it the travesty some people are making it out to be? No. It retreads pretty much the same territory as the original, and for a film that already wasn't original to begin with, that is not saying much. "Taken 2" follows the families of the victims of the first film, seeking vengeance against Bryan's (Liam Neeson) family. He and his wife are taken and he then gives his specific set of skills to his daughter, training her over the phone. It has some pretty intense sequences, but the action is not quite as good, the writing is foamed in, and the editing it's pretty convoluted and kinetic, sometimes working and sometimes not. This film succeeds for what it's worth, which is not much. I call this a cash grab that works. It can be a fun time, but lifeless like the first, and not as good.
