Critic Consensus: Melissa McCarthy remains an engaging screen presence, but her efforts aren't enough to keep the jumbled Tammy on track.

We've expected makeover narratives and personal-growth realizations from women on screen... in Tammy, we get a character - and her creator - patently uninterested in most of that journey. For Hollywood, that's radical.

'Tammy' is a disappointment, because it asks an energetic, unpredictable performer to play it so calculatingly, frustratingly safe.

The filmmakers never quite find the balance between real-life experience and freewheeling nonsense that drives the best comic road movies.

[Something] in Tammy you wouldn't expect to see in a mainstream comedy [is] the romantic pairing of McCarthy with indie heartthrob Mark Duplass, reversing the formula of the male slob who gets the conventionally beautiful girl.

The movie's principal intention is to make you laugh at a loser, and revel in scenes from which polite people would instinctively turn away.
The film, though, is as erratic as Tammy's driving, veering dangerously from gross-out comedy to rank sentimentality with no real sense of where it is headed.

Audience Reviews for Tammy
Don't get the hate on this one. Yes, it's stupid, but it's meant to be. Dumb comedy similar in tone to Stepbrothers. I laughed quite a few times, though it's not consistently funny and it does have its faults. Overall message is nice.

A few laughs here and there, but overall, it's just not very good.

She hit the road. The road hit back. Mediocre Drama/Comedy! Melissa McCarthy knows she has created this bloated sassy bitch with a kind and well meaning heart character, and she is taking it to the box office to cash in because plenty of people think she's funny. In 'Tammy' she has plenty of Hollywood names around her .. Susan Sarandon and Kathy Bates being most prominent and doing their role well. As a simple comedy it works fine. I don't think for one moment there is some meaningful message so many viewer seems to be seeking. It's just Tammy & granny hitting the road because they are tired of their daily routine and seek something different .... in Niagara Falls ... and they find their goal. And tear-up plenty of stuff on the way! Tammy, who was recently fired from a Topper Jack's fast food restaurant, returns home only to find her husband enjoying a romantic meal with the neighbor. She quickly packs her necessities, and travels down three houses to her parent's home. Upon denied use of her mom's car to drive to Niagara Falls, she quickly resorts to an "ailing" grandmother, who also lives in the home...Only instead of traveling alone, Grandma Pearl wants in on the road trip. After realizing Grandma Pearl has the funds, they hit the road. Pearl soon proves to be quite the alcoholic despite her diabetes, and Tammy quickly turns into the "baby-sitter." From finding love in a bar to robbing a Topper Jack's in order to bail Pearl out of jail, the quirky adventure will have you finding yourself riding along for the misadventures of Tammy.
