Movie Info

This unique western has a small cult following. It is the tale of a Swedish whaler who returns from a voyage to find that avaricious landgrabber and would-be oil baron Johnny Crale has killed his father. In the end, the adversaries have a showdown. The villain carries a gun; the hero his trusty harpoon.

A Trumbo screenplay all the way.

Arguably, its depiction of American's sour, rotten capitalistic core may be nothing new in the annals of the Western. But no one does it with such devilish relish and provocative panache as Trumbo, Young, and Lewis and the nightmare they conjure.

Blistering left wing Western, with unique surreal final showdown.

Had style and the expressions of an auteur filmmaker to make it standout from other westerns.

Audience Reviews for Terror in a Texas Town

the oddest western i've seen since 'johnny guitar' and once again sterling hayden is featured. his committed performance as a swedish whaler is what keeps this film together, in spite of his pretty laughable accent. and that final scene, well what can we say? it's the only old west showdown with a whaling harpoon. you'll just have to see it for yourself. the last film from the low budget director of 'gun crazy' and 'the big combo' is really fun

REALLY good B western. Maybe the only film where Sterling Hayden smiles and definitely the only movie where a man brings a WHALE HARPOON to a gun fight. Great direction, editing and cinematography to boot!

A good little B-western. Swedish immigrant farmers in Hollywood westerns, usually called either Larson or just The Swede, are generally a bit too meek for their own good and over-reliant on the American gunslinger, e.g. John Wayne, to fight their battles for them. Though he's still a stereotype, it's nice to see Sterling Hayden's vengeful sailor kickin' ass for a change.
