Movie Info

An eight-day pass, a kidnapping, and a greedy group of South American Indians provide the basic ingredients of this madcap adventure. A French air force pilot has the pass and plans to use it to see his girl friend in Paris. He gets there just in time to see a gang of South American Indians, who believe the girl knows the location of a set of statues that can pinpoint the location of a fabulous jungle treasure, kidnapping her. He follows them to the Brazilian jungle and many riotous adventures ensue. Eventually the lovers manage to escape and return to France just before the pilot's pass expires.

A loving pastiche of every chase film one can remember.

It's fun, in an imperialist, colonialist, patronizing, exotic-marginalized-foreigners way.

We don't think of Belmondo as an action star per se, but that's what he is here, smirking like Steve McQueen and managing to keep a cigarette clamped between his lips even when he's navigating hairpin turns on a motorbike.

The fun feels forced almost all the way through "That Man From Rio," at least until the pure action and Belmondo's athleticism take over.

That Man From Rio is a crazy delight, a stylish, early-'60s pastiche that folds in every adventure-movie cliché you've ever seen, and possibly invents a few new ones.

Surprisingly, the film works quite well on its own terms, starring the bemused New Wave star Belmondo, and it's interesting to note how Spielberg quite heavily plundered several of de Broca's set pieces for eventual re-use.

Audience Reviews for That Man From Rio

It must think that it is so exciting to make Jean-Paul Belmondo run up and down the entire movie, but in fact it is only repetitious, predictable and inane, with a sense of humor that usually falls flat (despite a few good moments) and a loose structure that makes it feel overlong.
