The Adventures of Pinocchio (Les aventures de Pinocchio) (1996)

Critic Consensus: The Adventures of Pinocchio is an admirably faithful adaptation of the source material, but it may be too frightening for younger viewers -- and too dull for older ones.

It's a very pleasant version, less cruel and nightmarish than Disney's cartoon predecessor, lacking a fairy godmother, and probably closer to Carlo Collodi's original story in other respects as well.

Though the effects don't always seamlessly integrate Pinocchio with his surroundings, the decorative period detail still gives a strong flavour of Carlo Collodi's imagination.

Though well crafted and occasionally charming, it lacks the emotional punch and genuine sense of wonder needed to bring the fable alive.

The Adventures of Pinocchio places an animated Pinocchio in a real world, where he looks so out of place that we can scarcely think of him as anything but a special effect.

This movie is a travesty. A piece of the original Pinocchio died with the creation of this film.
