The Age of Adaline (2015)

Critic Consensus: The Age of Adaline ruminates on mortality less compellingly than similarly themed films, but is set apart by memorable performances from Blake Lively and Harrison Ford.

Critic Reviews for The Age of Adaline

The unhurried storytelling matches Adaline's endless life, making this a respectable date movie.

Like Adaline, the film gives the sense of being somewhat uncomfortable in 2015, but while the movie makes a case for romanticizing the past, Adaline's story shows the limitations of detaching yourself from the present.

Lively is appealing, natural and often touching.

Immortality can be depressing, but immortality when you have no discernible personality is truly terrifying. If the film were even the slightest bit aware of the macabre message it sends, it might be worth wasting a few mortal minutes on.

Lively does a good line in aloof, and if Huisman never convinces as the object of her desire then the narrative's peripheral relations more than fill the emotional gap.

A quaintly disarming fairy tale, refusing any date that isn't written in the stars.

Audience Reviews for The Age of Adaline

The movie premise of the lady that would not age due to an accident is presented by an off voice in a way that leaves no doubts about the sincerity of the story told. The plot itself has all the trademarks of a classic love drama, especially the San Francisco scenes have their very own charm. The cast works great together, the twist gives the last act a very new dynamic. Romantics will certainly enjoy this.

In one of the most surprising films I have seen in a very long time, "Age of Adaline" presents an extremely engaging and effective story. That however, is the films biggest flaw as well. After crashing into a river, a lightning bolt henceforth makes Adaline immune to the ravages of time. To me that storyline is a little iffy. The magical way the narrator explains it in the film and the way the world evolves around her, was very beautiful to me. Yes, it is a stretch to believe this to ever happen in reality, but if you let that slide, you may just have a wonderful time watching this as I did. "Age of Adaline" is well-acted, well-directed, and especially well-scripted. I believed everything each character said and how they reacted to her. Overall, "Age of Adaline" has imperfections, but I really bought into this story and I wanted to see even more. I really like this film.

Flawed. Had the potential to be something really good, but falls flat. Blake Lively is outstanding and plays Adaline with a timelessness that rings true for the old soul she truly is. The romance parts felt icky to me with the father and son and I hated the voice over. Worth a watch, but once was enough.
