Nouveau riche American Christopher Newman (Matthew Modine) turns to blackmail in the name of true love in this adaptation of Henry James's novel. Christopher falls in love with Claire De Cintre (Aisling O'Sullivan), but her mother, Madame de Bellegarde (Diana Rigg), refuses to accept him. When a nosy maid (Brenda Fricker) helps Christopher uncover the Madame's dark secret, he decides to use it against her in order to marry Claire.

The mother! Diana Rigg is so good as Madame de Bellegarde -- also a widow, also well out of a dreadful marriage, although how she got out of it is the novel's second-ugliest secret -- that she should have been in the book.
