The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

Critic Consensus: The Cabin in the Woods is an astonishing meta-feat, capable of being funny, strange, and scary -- frequently all at the same time.

Critic Reviews for The Cabin in the Woods

This is, I know, a self-aware film: its clichés are parodies of horror clichés generally, but to subvert a form, it should, first and foremost, work as an entertainment, and it most surely does not.

The filmmakers are less interested in providing a slow buildup to their frights than in splattering the clichés of the form in funny, spirited ways.

In order to subvert any popular form, entertainment first has to work on its own terms. Goddard and Whedon are too busy geeking out to bother with those requirements.

It sounds like the oldest horror story in the book but from the first scene of The Cabin in the Woods it's clear that the director, Drew Goddard, and his co-writer, Joss Whedon, are bent on turning the formula upside down.

The setup is intriguing but the balance feels off. Goddard and Whedon overplay the winking postmodernism.

Audience Reviews for The Cabin in the Woods

A decent twist to the old creepy cabin in the woods genre. It led to an unusual feel to the film though, it wasn't like watching a slasher film as you know something else is going on behind the scenes. It has a fair bit of dark humour to it as well. The twist does make for a more interesting film, so at least it tried something different.

In times of reality shows, this type of meta-film is such a brilliant idea, an incredibly smart and thought-provoking commentary that plays with the conventions of the genre using plenty of humor, sharp irony and intelligence - and the last half-hour is especially amazing.
