The Disaster Artist (2017)

Critic Consensus: Oh, hai Mark. The Disaster Artist is a surprisingly poignant and charming movie-about-a-movie that explores the creative process with unexpected delicacy.

Critic Reviews for The Disaster Artist

All Critics (351) | Top Critics (75)

The Room falls under the category of "so bad it's good." The Disaster Artist, directed by James Franco, looks to capture everything that went wrong, and a few things that miraculously went right.

Franco's film is disappointing and more than a little patronizing.

It's entertaining, if framed and cut a touch manically.

Funny -- sometimes brutally -- and surprisingly touching, it works whether you've seen the source material or not, though there are plentiful shout-outs to die-hard fans.

Unlike its bosom buddy, Tim Burton's Ed Wood, it might be too niche a subject to resonate with mass audiences but it's evident Franco and crew are having a whale of a time.

Wiseau also makes a pretty good avatar for Franco himself: a mercurial, relentless performer whose ambition encompasses a thrilling willingness to crash and burn. And it's that identification that makes the comedy work here: Franco kids because he loves.

Audience Reviews for The Disaster Artist

James Franco embodies Tommy Wiseau with an incredible, shocking resemblance (even when he laughs), creating an excellent dramatic comedy that is not only hilarious as it explores the character's idiosyncrasies but is also surprisingly touching in the way it makes us feel for him.

Certainly a train wreck waiting to happen, a movie about what may be one of the leading contenders for worst movies ever made, avoids the crash and actually highlights, among other things, the validity of dreams, friendship and, of all things, Hollywood itself. That two brothers play the leads throws brotherhood into the mix. I have to admit that I had no aspirations for this work but was pleasantly surprised.

I'll preface this review by saying I think you need to have seen and been familiar with The Room in order to appreciate this film. Otherwise, it comes off as a strange story and an overly eccentric performance by Franco, rather than an accurate portrayal of story and character. You won't die laughing or be emotionally moved to tears, but it's a well-balanced film that gets an extra bump for doing justice as an homage to a hilariously awful cult classic.
