Seeing these actors together is wonderful. If there is an edge, it goes to Mr. McKellen, whose scurrying, effeminate Norman is a study in subordination and repressed emotion.

As a whole, it does pale in comparison to the great Peter Yates directed version of the play from 1983, but McKellen and Hopkins certainly make this a worthwhile adaptation.
