Movie Info

A teacher learns some valuable life lessons from her first professional assignment in this period romantic drama set in 1953. Nena (Isabella Ragonese), a lovely young woman from Southern Italy, is eager to pursue a career as a teacher, but is having trouble finding work. When Nena is offered a position at a rural village in the North, she's wary about leaving behind her family and her upper class fiancé Francesco (Alberto Boll), but she's convinced a few months away will not spoil their relationship. Nena doesn't get along with her new students and doesn't make many friends in the village, and matters become even worse when she learns Francesco has left her for another woman. Feeling lonely and rejected, Nena stumbles into a relationship with Giovanni (Francesco Chiarello), a rough-hewn laborer, but this short-term romance threatens to become a lifelong commitment when the locals discover they've been sleeping together and insist the couple get married. Il Primo Incarico (aka The First Assignment) was the first feature film from director and co-screenwriter Giorgia Cecere.
