The Five-Year Engagement (2012)

Critic Consensus: While certainly overlong, The Five-Year Engagement benefits from the easy chemistry of its leads and a funny, romantic script with surprising depth and intelligence.

Movie Info

The director and writer/star of Forgetting Sarah Marshall reteam for the irreverent comedy The Five-Year Engagement. Beginning where most romantic comedies end, the new film from director Nicholas Stoller, producer Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and Rodney Rothman (Get Him to the Greek) looks at what happens when an engaged couple, Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, keeps getting tripped up on the long walk down the aisle. -- (C) Universal

It has emotional heft, with no frantic, last-minute drives to the airport, just a male and female lead who not only share actual, proper, bona fide chemistry - hallelujah! Praise be! - but are also allowed to go head-to-head as equals.

More often, the movie reduces everything to sitcom levels of tidiness and routine.

Offers plenty of chuckles - although not enough to justify the middle-aged spread of its two-hour running time.

Somewhere, buried in The Five-Year Engagement, is a sparkling screwball comedy fighting against a turntable running on long play.

Segel and Stoller could - no, should have been bolder: their leading lady deserves it.

Audience Reviews for The Five-Year Engagement

Like Stoller's previous movies, this perceptive romantic comedy is less about the laughs (they are there, only timidly) than actually offering a keen and complex look into modern relationships, and it could have been even better if not for a long middle act, uneven in tone and pacing.

Another rom-com? Well, this one is quite unique for its originality even though the story is quite usual.. A couple get together, decide to marry.. And then someone's dream come but the others gave up their dream and so it goes until their breakup.. But the must funny thing is the ending which I like for surprising, and the choice of Jason Segel and Emily Blunt to lead this movie is quite a good choice..

Best thing about this was seeing my former home and current home all looking mighty purty. Oh, and the falling down on the ice stuff.
