Critic Reviews for The Gift
All Critics (196) | Top Critics (45) | Fresh (178) | Rotten (18)
The violence is always emotional and psychological, not bloody and physical, which makes The Gift that much more disconcerting.
There are promising moments here, but The Gift is too on-the-nose to convince as a fully formed feature. A commendable effort, nonetheless.
The Gift is a tense, unsettling and expertly crafted psychological thriller that keeps the audience consistently on edge. [Full review in Japanese]
It concludes with one of the most repugnant turns this side of a '60s-era exploitation "roughie," a "twist" so vile it pretty much cancels out the considerable skill and accomplishment of what's preceded it.

It's a concept that's more often the basis of arrested development comedies about late bloomers who finally come into their own, but there's nothing funny about how the past looms over the adults that Gordo and Simon have become.
Edgerton's talent as an actor has been evident for a while, but The Gift announces him as a genuine triple threat.

Audience Reviews for The Gift
While you gotta appreciate this psychological thriller playing with expectations about how such stories usually play out, it missed to take a few punches early on. The film stays fairly entertaining and is overall well done, but before the surprisingly evil ending there just isn't all that much getting your blood pumping. It doesn't help that when you think about the title, the twist is already right there in front of you.

A highly enjoyable and creepy thriller. Certainly makes you question as to who is the real villain here! A uniquely and we'll executed plot.

Super Reviewer
The Gift is devious and calculating with a twist that's inconceivable. The film is able to garner up enough suspense and a thorough story to make for a surprisingly suspenseful tale of past, present and future. 4.5/5
