Though shot for television on a low budget, this is a sumptuous experience.

Its sad and bittersweet effects are slowly achieved in brooding, garrulous, overly introspective style, except by Jeanne Moreau.

It's awkward yet exquisite.
Minor but not without interest.
Perhaps Welles, in playing a man who doesn't understand art, was embodying his more vitriolic critics. He was presenting ever more complex art to critical agents, and was constantly met with confusion and literal interpretations.
A dreamy fable of just-so proportion and asethetics...this literate and richly strange film has layers of meaning available to the viewer. [Criterion Blu-ray]
