Movie Info

In this maudlin melodrama, Betty Bellew (Gloria Swanson) becomes an innocent victim when her husband Lance (Robert Cain) comes home drunk one night and finds Betty innocently talking with their male neighbor. In a jealous rage, Lance shoots the man and kills him. Lance is tried and eventually acquitted when Betty refuses to testify against him. He eventually divorces Betty and gains custody of their young son. Disheartened and depressed, Betty boards the steamship Olympic and heads for Europe. She falls into the alcoholic social life of the idol rich and becomes the object of carnal desire for the lecherous Count Radisloff (Frank Elliott). Her ex-husband Lance saves her from the Count when his aunt talks him into a reconciliation.

Critic Reviews for The Impossible Mrs. Bellew

All Critics (2)

It is a succession of close-ups of Gloria Swanson's eyelids, with a few long shots of social life thrown in to lend atmosphere.

The picture is just another one of those things which people who never think anything because they have nothing to think about and nothing to think with are going to like. It ought to make a lot of money.
